Kuniyoshi of Warrior Pictures by getting to first base of his success
In recent years, ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797~1861) became one of the celebrated ukiyo-e artists for us, and many exhibitions have been organized so far. His charm is often recited as “fantastic” and “humor”.

In fact, his first series which became a big success was wild and cool warrior picture. These pictures are pictures of the series titled “One Hundred and Eight Heroes from Tales of the Water Margin”.

This series pictorializes the theme of Chinese novel titled “Tales of the Water Margin” which was known in Japan at that time. He depicted exotic and powerful foreign heroes of the novel by dynamic brushstroke. Kuniyoshi’s challenging work of art gained much popularity at lightning speed. Such popularity gave rise to a tattoo. Kuniyoshi established a strong presence so-called “Kuniyoshi of Warrior Pictures” by getting to first base of this success.

It will be exhibited almost all pictures from this series in addition to various pictures which related with the theme of “Tales of the Water Margin” by Kuniyoshi. Please enjoy the figures of brave heroes that Kuniyoshi threw his whole soul into.
